Off-Page Optimization refers to the process of acquiring relevant search engine friendly inbound links from reputable sources. There are several ways to accomplish this . . . .

  • Submit your site to other webmasters and request a reciprocal link exchange.
  • Submit your site to directories where you may obtain a one-way or a reciprocal link exchange.
  • Write articles for submission to other websites with content or subject matter relevant to your product, service, idea or topic. For providing this technical expertise on a particular subject matter, you would include a link back to your website within the article giving recognition for your contribution.
  • Offer a free service to your site visitors such as open source code scripts, free web page graphics, stock photos and/or other products or services. Include in your terms of service,  a request for a link back to your site as an acknowledgement of the free service you have provided.
Recently, reciprocal link exchanges have been devalued because they are not considered a "natural" vote for your website but rather a cooperation between webmasters. One-way links, however, are more natural and harder to obtain. Below are some general guidelines for effectively acquiring inbound links to boost your page rank popularity whether that be a one-way or reciprocal link exchange.

Write a unique, relevant title and description for your link and include some of your relevant key word phrases in the title and description but don't overdo it. Vary the title and description of the link using different keywords each time, so that you improve your website rankings for ALL your keywords and your links will appear more natural or organic to search engines. When search engines find hundreds of links with the same anchor text (title) and description, they tend to discount the value of the links.

Browse the categories to find the best category for your link. This is very important because a link, placed on a page with textual content relevant to the topic of your website has more value in the eyes of search engines and human visitors alike. Avoid sites that provide a list of outbound links since this is most often created by automated scripts and is of little value to search engines or human visitors. Then, if your website fits more than one category, select the category which is reached by the least number of clicks from the home page and/or has the least outbound links on the page thereby giving your link more Page Rank.

Make sure that the site you are submitting to is SEO friendly. This means the links should be direct and static so that the search engine robots will be able to find and index your link. You should view the web page source code by right clicking on the page and selecting "View Source" from the drop-down menu. Make sure the robots page meta tag does not contain the nofollow or noindex attribute. Inspect the link codes. They must be placed within the anchor text tag between the beginning and ending anchor tag. The URL in the HREF attribute must be pointing directly to a linked website, not redirected from the website's domain link or dynamically generated from a database on the server.

Remember that not any link is a good link. To have positive effect on your web site link popularity, the link must be static, direct, without the nofollow attribute, be placed on a page with some PR among not more than 25-30 other links and be surrounded by content related to your website.
